Project Description

The City of Scottsdale developed streetscape designs for Scottsdale Road. The project included:

Comprehensive streetscape design guidelines for the entire 25-mile length of Scottsdale Road.

Developed streetscape design for Scottsdale Road from Roosevelt Street to Earll Drive.

The overall purpose of the improvements is to create an integrated distinctive streetscape design that will enhance the aesthetic of the road, respect neighborhoods, provide opportunities for public art, improve mobility for pedestrian, bicycle, and transit travel, and preserve the opportunity for future high capacity transit, such as the bus rapid transit currently planned in the Valley's regional transportation plan.

The Scottsdale Road Streetscape Design Guidelines project was led by Otak, Inc in partnership with the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Public Art Program. The design team was comprised of urban designers, landscape architects, planners, civil engineers, traffic engineers, architects, and environmental graphic designers. The design team worked in conjunction with the project team artists, Bob Adams and Buster Simpson, to ensure that strong design was an integral element of the project and to provide guidelines for signature art opportunities in the future.

In addition to the design of streetscape elements and furnishings described and illustrated in the Scottsdale Road Streetscape Guidelines, there are opportunities in the future for public art and creative expression that can be integrated into corridor improvements along Scottsdale Road to make the street more attractive, interesting, distinctive, and memorable  The artist team recommended a variety of situations and locations where stand-alone artworks or integrated public art elements would be appropriate.  In general, public artworks are to be concentrated in areas where they will receive the highest amount of pedestrian and vehicular interaction.

Currently, artist Bob Adams is providing construction oversight, reviewing prototypes and approving materials, of the hardscape elements in the section under construction from Roosevelt Street to Earll Drive. Next he will bring the screen designs that characterize that differing segments of Scottsdale Road to detailed cad drawings, which will be available for use by private developers and businesses along the corridor. In the Fall of 2011, the artist selection process will begin to place artworks on the Historical Happenstance plinths and Community plinths currently under construction in the segment from Roosevelt Street to Earll Drive.
