The
Scottsdale Public Art Program, in coordination with the City of Scottsdale
Park's Department, commissioned Catapult Strategic Design to create a
unique standard design for entry monuments to City parks. The design demonstrates
a commitment to functionality while representing Scottsdale's concern
for integrating art into the everyday fabric of the community. After seeking
and hearing public feedback on the prototype, the Parks Department increased
the size of the lettering making it easier to read from a distance. The
park entry monument design and prototype was approved by the Scottsdale
Public Art Board in 2003 (was the Public Art and Collections Committee
at the time).
Catapult Strategic Design (Phoenix), who also designed the entry monuments
for Phoenix Mountain Preserves, used the leaf as symbolic reference to "park" in their design. The leaf is stylized, meant to give
the impression of a leaf, does not represent one particular kind of foliage.
To some it might resemble the tiny leaf of a mesquite or palo verde tree.
Durability, design, and readability were important considerations in the
approval of the design. The entry monuments are made of powder coated
steel and will resist deterioration and fading.
