Project on hold indefinitely because of changes of priorities and funding of canal projects on the Waterfront. The underpass and pedestrian/bikeway is currently a landscaped closure and not accessible.

Project Location

Under the Marshall Way Bridge on the Arizona Canal at Marshall Way, adjacent to the north bank of the canal. This photo is looking west, so the north bank is on the near side. It is anticipated that the pedestrian/bicyle path will return and the landscaping closure altered once the waterfront development progresses.

Description
The focus of the design process was to enliven the Marshall Way Bridge underpass experience for pedestrians and bicyclists.  Before closed off to the public to await development of the parcels to the northwest of the Mashall Way Bridge, the underpass offered  fifty-six feet of flat and convex walls and ground planes that converged in a dramatic squeeze.  Artist Al Price chose this location because it provided large surface areas on which to cast changing shadow patterns, and offered an opportunity to animate the underpass and provide an attraction that excites the traveler’s perception of light and form.

Future demands of the eventual development of the canal bank could change the focus of the art project to a new location.

Depending on when this occurs, all elements of the project are subject to change.
