Papago Park, SW corner of McDowell Rd & Galvin Pkwy Description Completed: 1992 The Scottsdale Public Art Program contributed funds toward a public artwork commissioned by the Phoenix Arts Commission on the boundary of Phoenix and Scottsdale. Pinto and Martino's desert restoration project employs ancient water harvesting processes to revegetate the site and heighten residents' awareness of the park's fragile desert ecology. The work consists of seven 16 foot high vertical markers sited around a 240-foot wall with seven branches radiating from its center, referencing the tree of life. Run off from summer storms is captured and diverted through a channel in the wall onto each of the seven farming terraces, planted with native palo verde trees, ironwoods, creosote bushes, brittlebush, and desert wildflowers. The collaborative effort between the cities of Scottsdale and Phoenix serves as a boundary marker for the two cities as well as an entrance into Papago Park, an 890-acre desert park in Southeast Phoenix.
