Location

Northwest corner of Second Street and Marshall WayLoloma Station

Description

The Loloma Transit Station serves a dual purpose: as a beacon for transit users and as a gateway for downtown Scottsdale.

The buildings are constructed in perspective, each narrowing towards a vanishing point. The optical effect is enhanced by concentric rings that radiate and overlap. The rings also appear on the sides and tops of the buildings, as if the ground has been folded to create them. Desert native palo brea trees provide shade throughout the site, and the landmark clock tower stands to the north.

About the artist

Since the 1980s, Vito Acconci has been creating site-specific public art. In addition to his numerous permanent and temporary public art projects, Acconci has also exhibited solo in Vito Acconci_Loloma Station clock towermuseums and galleries all over the world. In creating public art, Acconci takes the phrase public sense literally. As stated by the artist, space is public' in the sense that: 1) it's usable by people; 2) it's accessible to people and 3) it functions as a public forum. He endeavors to create a piece of public art that includes the conventions everyone in the community knows by Loloma Transit Center_Photo by Edwin Benoitheart, but also shift them so that they may provoke thought, be questioned and reconsidered.
