Location

Civic Center Library, Scottsdale

Description

Completed: 1994

Media: wood, acrylic paint, oil

Project History: A large Chinese Elm tree that died was removed from behind the Scottsdale Public Library in 1990, making way for expansion construction. Sonny Ness, a local citizen and the City's ex-arborist, approached City staff about salvaging the tree so that it might be used as the basis of a public art project. The tree was cut down and placed in storage until 1991 when Kenji Umeda was selected out of 13 artists who submitted qualification materials for the project on a limited invitational competition.
