Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Northeast Lawn area outside City Hall

Description

Completed: 2009

Austin Deuel's  "The Chaplain" sculpture will provide a gathering place for veterans and other special celebrations on the Scottsdale Civic Center mall.  Formerly Scottsdale's veterans had a memorial plaque on the mall which was in a small area that could not accommodate many veterans or visitors for honorary ceremonies.   This new sculpture honors veterans and their chaplains, who have served as spiritual advisors to soldiers and provided solace in a time of war. It will be placed in a lovely park-like area that can hold lots of people.

Austin Deuel's work will be appreciated as a wonderful memorial, as well as the value of Scottsdale showing work from a talented, nationally known, local artist. He also did a monumental Vietnam Veterans memorial in San Antonio, Texas.

This sculpture was a community initiated work. The Scottsdale Public Art program and City of Scottsdale often work with citizens to help them realize their public art projects. In this case the city supported the siting costs, and the sculpture itself is paid for entirely by veterans' fundraising efforts.
