Free Public Event July 27, 2009 —August 27, 2009
Phoenix artist Aleksandra Buha will take up an artist residency in The Gallery@theLibrary, in the Scottsdale Civic Center Library, from July 27 to August 27th. She will bring her paints, easel and brushes to create intriguing oil paintings before the public in the gallery on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm to 7 pm. Buha will also conduct a free painting workshop on August 10 at 2:00 pm. Space is limited, please RSVP to SPAProjects@sccarts.org. In this workshop, participants will receive instruction on techniques to make a monochromatic acrylic painted portrait from a photograph of themselves or a loved one. Bring your photograph (ideally both a color and black and white copy). Supplies including an 8x10” canvas board, paints, and a paintbrush will be provided. About the artist: In 1997, Aleksandra Buha moved to Arizona with her family from Bosnia and Herzegovina (former Yugoslavia) as a result of the destruction of the War in Bosnia, through a US sponsored refugee resettlement program. This relocation provided her with the opportunity to discover and fully commit to her passion for painting. Buha’s work explores how perceptions of relationships change with the passing of time. By blurring reality’s sharp edges, she creates ambiguity, yet her subjects retain their individuality amid the rest of their world. We see the moveable, energizing and transformative nature of light in her vision. Buha’s paintings celebrate the human element, searching for what connects us all to one another. Buha holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Arizona State University and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fashion Design from Phoenix College. She lives and works in Phoenix, where she teaches drawing and painting. Her work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows.
