California artist Jeffrey Gold has been working with Granite Reef Senior Center (GRSC) and Scottsdale Public Art staff to develop a three-year artist residency and community interactions that will result in a very large, multi-panel painting to be hung in the main lobby of the GRSC.
The oil painting will be a historic timeline and non-traditional portrait which is at once intimate and personal, as well as a universal touchstone for nostalgic memory. The painting’s timeline will cover some fifty-plus years and chronicle events beginning with his childhood in the early 1960’s, and culminating with imagery, issues and icons through 2011. The project will result in an enormous multi-paneled painting approximately six and a half feet high by thirty feet long. Gold’s hyper-realist painting style will include images of a family photograph, toys, comic book images, model airplane, old school yearbook photo, campaign button, television test screen, and writing utensils, among other things.
The painting should serve to stimulate conversations and stir nostalgic feelings, evoking a strong connection to the work, making the GRSC a perfect place to enjoy it. Gold is very interested in working with staff and the community for the project through a series of interactions and painting demonstrations throughout the duration of the project.
