Spring/Summer 2009

Two important recognitions we are pleased to share with you.

Tucson artist Mary Lucking and Scottsdale Public Art won national recognition at the 2009 Americans for the Arts Year in Review-Lucking's Amur Serenade, which debuted at Night Lights on the Canal last fall was named an exemplary public art project-less than 40 national artworks were honored out of over 300 submissions. SPA is consistently granted this prestigious national award-last year, Terraced Cascade at Chaparral Park and Cactus Mirage at McDowell Mountain Ranch aquatic center were both selected.

Phoenix Artist David Therrien and Scottsdale Public Art prominently featured in the national journal Public Art Review, 20 Year Anniversary Issue (Spring/Summer 2009 issue)


  • Original commission Beautiful Light by David Therrien (who was born and raised in Scottsdale), debuted at Scottsdale Waterfront-only 12 national commissions featured.
  • Essay by SPA Associate Director Margaret Bruning-only 20 invitational essays by industry professionals.
  • National conference report by SPA Project Manager Donna Isaac-only 5 reports included.
  • Essay by Phoenix artist Gregory Sale about Love Buttons-an original Scottsdale Public Art commission.

2008

Every August, Art in America magazine releases its Annual Guide issue. The Doors, by Donald Lipski with Jim Green, was selected through a national juried process to be one of 21 public artworks featured in the 2008 Annual Guide.

2008

Not one, but two artworks from the Scottsdale Public Art collection were selected to be one of the 45 highlighted in this prestigious review

On June 23, 2008 Americans for the Arts announced the 45 selections for the 2008 Public Art Year in Review, which celebrates the most successful, innovative, and creative public art projects completed during the previous year. Presented at the Americans for the Arts annual convention in Philadelphia by curators Jody Pinto and Ted Landsmark to an audience of over 1,500 arts professionals from across the country, the winning submissions were selected from a pool of over 200.
