The Scottsdale Public Art Program, in conjunction with the 2007 Scottsdale Arts Festival, commissioned artist Phill Evans to present his “wind ship sculpture,” Scottsdale Gondola. This unique artwork allowed festival goers to lie in a hammock placed within a thirty foot sculpture and float, balanced in free space. The gondola in itself, beautifully sculpted and equipped with artful sails, could glide gently in the wind. People of all ages enjoyed calm and respite amid the hustle and bustle of the festival.

Artist Phill Evans has worked with sculptural design in Sacramento, California for over thirty years. Evans has a diverse arts canon and has won numerous national and international awards for works including ornamental metals, animated displays, kinetic public art and sculptural environments. More of his work can be viewed at www.phillevans.com.

The Scottsdale Public Art Program is dedicated to bringing the best public art events and artist residencies possible to our community. Scottsdale Gondola, along with other recent public art events like Jarvis Rockwell's Maya II and Liz Hickok’s Scottsdale in Jell-O®, are must-see attractions that keep Scottsdale a vital arts and cultural destination.
